Caution: Pessimism Ahead

Oy vey. Is this week over yet? This one has been something else, let me tell you. I've had so many little annoyances and thrown so many subsequent mini-hissyfits that I'm ready to throw in the towel on this one. From paying $9.00 for an evening movie ticket (on a Tuesday night? You have to be kidding me), to being fed up with Meijer's complete lack of a decent produce section, to stubbornly refusing to give up on my eggplant parmesan for dinner last night (an idea which only came to fruition 3 trips to Kroger, 3 eggplants, and an hour's worth of tears after it was first conceived), I am exhausted. Luckily, Josh is treating me to dinner tonight and afterward I plan on parking it on the couch at 9 to watch the presidential debate. I don't foresee any more breakdowns tonight...fingers crossed.

In other news, I realized this morning that I've already let myself fall into this monotonous and unhealthy routine during the week of work, sleep, work, sleep that I promised myself I would avoid like the plague during my year off. I've never for one second doubted my decision to work for a year and let me just say that not having homework is a truly glorious feeling. However, I certainly haven't crossed too many items off of my "Things I Want to Do During My Year Off That I Wouldn't Otherwise Have Time For" list, like reading the 100+ novels on my to-read list, or attaining fluency in Spanish (scoff all you want, mis amigos...it will happen), or getting "back in shape" (it's been so long now since I've been in shape, this phrase is becoming n/a). I want to do these things not just to have the satisfaction of crossing them off of a list, but also because I'm in a unique position right now of actually having both the time and the funds (more or less) for these activities. Not to mention I'm kind of bored during the week when my friends are busy studying, I'm not a fan of TV, and I NEED to work harder on having a life outside of my job. I promise myself here's a new Sonya - in shape, positive, Spanish-speaking Sonya.

Starting this Monday.

Makin' it Big Time

An article on my sister and her Fulbright Grant was featured on the front page of this week's Kentwood Advance, my hometown's weekly, local publication. How fun! Check it out here.

Crappy Birthday To Me

I officially turned 22 years old this past Friday, September 24th and I can't say that I'd want to do it again anytime soon.

That tickle in my throat on Wednesday night turned into a serious cold and sore throat by Thursday, oddly coupled with a side of nausea. When I woke up on my big day Friday, my cold felt much better but not so much my stomach. I should've known that Friday just wasn't my day when I spilled the entire contents of one of my desk drawers on my floor, spewing hundreds of thumb tacks and multi-colored paper clips around my room. I later spilled a bottle of Propel in my bag on my way to work and soaked my planner, my bag, and my shirt. Later, as I was enjoying the weather and campus landscaping by eating my lunch outside, the sprinkler system came on Happy-Gilmore-style and got me wet. After a rocky start, I was planning on a birthday dinner at Champion House with my parents to lift my spirits. However, after a queasy car ride, I ended up throwing up 6 times at dinner, rushing my poor parents out of the restaurant, and nixing all of my evening celebratory plans in order to go to bed at 10 pm. In general, my birthday stunk this year. Luckily, I had many well-wishers and friends who wanted to celebrate with me, but putting anything in my stomach, let alone alcohol, did not sound very appealing. *sigh*

I woke up yesterday feeling 110% better. I'm not sure if I had the 24 hour flu or food poisoning or what, but I knew I was feeling better because I scarfed down a piece of the chocolate birthday cake (with pink frosting!) that Julia and AJ baked for me at 8:15 in the morning. Additioinally, one of Josh's little birthday surprises was to take me to Uncle John's Apple Orchard/Cider Mill for the day. I love doing fall-ish activities and he bought me all the donuts and cider I could ever want :) We walked through the corn maze, watched apple cider being made, and had an all around great time. Last night, Carrie and Libby made a very heartfelt effort to re-enact my birthday celebration and I headed out with them to The Brown Jug for a drink. I called it an early night but appreciated their enthusiasm. Even though I *again* missed that narrow window of opportunity to get together with a large group of my friends, I'm hoping it's not a long time before those plans materialize again. Thanks to all of you who wished me a happy birthday and wanted to celebrate with me. Hopefully 23 will be a little more welcoming.

Emergency O.J.

Uh-oh. This can't be good. 2 days before my big birthday extravaganza and I'm getting a really painful and swollen throat and runny nose. Come to think of it, I think it's the same damn throat infection I've had twice already this year. One would think that would be enough to force me into a doctor's office to have this thing taken care of once and for all, but I am again choosing to self-medicate with orange juice, Tylenol, and lots of complaining.

I was planning on writing more tonight but I'm so sleepy right now. I guess some rest would do me good. Cross your fingers that I feel better my Friday :(

p.s. ~ I'm going to the Union tomorrow morning at 9 am sharp to purchase tickets to see Michael Moore speak here next Wednesday, 9/29. Here's hoping I get some!

What's the most commonly misspelled first name?

If you guessed Marilyn, then you guessed right! That's one of the many new tid-bits of information I picked up at Bar Trivia night tonight at Connor O'Neil's. At Stephanie's suggestion, Julia, AJ, Hal, Josh, Kevin, and myself headed downtown to test our knowledge and competitive spirit tonight. I must hand it to myself for knowing that Roman Polanski directed Rosemary's Baby and being able to sing-song my way into counting 24 Greek alphabet letters, but besides that, we were screwed. Although we fared well in the Movies category, the rest of our game went down the crapper. We're going to try to practice a little so that we can win the jackpot next week. Maybe we can recruit Steph to join our team - of course she knew that Benjamin Franklin invented a stove that bore his name. That nutty girl :)

Anyhow, I have a lot to update about this weekend and this coming week (cough, my birthday, cough), but I'm too tired to think right now. Hopefully I'll find the time to post tomorrow between work and the 2-hour season finale of The Amazing Race on CBS. *sigh* I'll miss my fun Tuesday evening trips around the world all from the comfort of my living room.

Until tomorrow, adieu.

No Tanya, No Cry

My sister leaves tomorrow morning to spend a year in the rice paddies of Bangladesh researching gender development in rural areas with her Fulbright Grant. I can't say that I'm not totally bumming out about the prospect of not having anyone with whom to share my immature toilet humor (with Josh?...are you kidding?) for an entire calendar year, but I must also acknowledge the enormous opportunity this is for her. I can't wait to hear all about her adventures in Dhaka and the villages of Bangladesh, as well as updates about our family in Calcutta. She'll be visiting Cal during Durga Puja, a festive celebration honoring the Hindu goddess Ma Durga, in late October this year - I'm very envious. Rumor has it that this occassion can only be truly experienced on the streets of Calcutta, not in a rented banquet hall somewhere in Troy, Michigan. I'll just have to opt for the latter, I guess.

*sigh* I'm driving home tonight and coming back to Ann Arbor less than 12 hours later just so that I can see my sis before she leaves in the morning. I'm wiping away a little tear just thinking about her being gone for so long, but also because I'm the proudest dang sister there ever was. Bon voyage and best of luck, T.

I heart NY

Well...I've been working on a post-NY post for about 40 minutes now and just lost all of it. I think I'm going to scream. Bear with me while I try to reconstruct my lost masterpiece.

Basically, New York rocked my world. Carrie and I left at the ungodly hour of 6 am and touched down at Laguardia around 7:15, but not before the pilot did a little loop-de-loop around Manhattan. Due to the sunny and clear morning, the city has never looked so brilliant to me before. All of the buildings were perfect and shiny and I squeezed the miniature-looking Statue of Liberty between my fingers. Hehe. Anyhow, we went straight to Shadi's apartment in Brooklyn to freshen up even though she was gone at work. After using the shower, napping in her bed, and eating all of her food, Carrie and I headed out for our adventure in the city. It began by us getting lost in the metro system (x 3) but *somehow* ending up in the Chrysler Building. That day, we were the unabashed tourists stopping to take pictures of tall buildings, saying "excuse me" and "thank you," and unfolding our over-sized map at every subway junction. Oh well. We had a great time together and we visited Rockefeller Center, Times Square, and the New York Public Library, got ice cream with sprinkles, and saw the Naked Cowboy. That night, we met up with the Shadster, went out in Brooklyn with a few of her friends, and called it an early night.

The next day, Shadi guided us around the city and we got to visit SoHo, Chinatown, and Little Italy (read: more shopping and eating). We headed back to Brooklyn and cooked up a delicious dinner of eggplant parmesan and salad from fresh produce purchased from the corner market hours before. Aaah, I love New York. Saturday night was a doozy as we bar hopped along 8th Ave. I remember that we ate a lot of french fries and played some wicked air guitar to "Sweet Child O' Mine" in a pub called Kevin St. James'. *Note: Shadi did not partake in the air guitar playing and was actually mature and composed in public, unlike Carrie and myself*. The crazy night culminated in a bar called Scruffy Duffy (Carrie laughed about that for days) where Shadi chatted with an admirer all night long, Carrie earned a free drink from the Michigan-born-and-raised bartender for being from the mitten state, and drunk "Danny from Connecticut" purchased me a thong with the bar's logo on it so that I'd "always remember him". Hmmm...I've never had a stranger buy me racy underwear before but hey, it's free and makes for a funny story. Here are a few pics of us that night:

Let me just say that I'm certainly not used to New York's 4 am closing time and staying out until 5:30 two nights in a row definitely punished me last week. Oh well, it was so much fun. The next day, after sleeping well into the afternoon, we met up with Carrie's friend Lisa and walked about Greenwich Village and West Village. I love those little bohemian villages with their cute (but overpriced!) paper stores and cafes. *sigh* Here's a pic of us on NYU's campus...if you can call it that:

That night, we ate dinner at the most famous pizzeria in New York called Grimaldi's, situated right underneath the Brooklyn Bridge. The line was out the door and around the corner of the tiny restaurant, and I can see why - fresh slices of mozzarella, whole black olives, and fresh leaves of basil were among the toppings. When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's amore I guess:

After dinner, we headed out in Greenwich with Carrie's friend Lisa and cousin Drew:

Boy, this is getting lengthy. Okay, the next day we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan which was awesome. The view was spectacular and the weather was perfect. See for yourself:

We spent the rest of the day simply soaking up the city, finishing up some last minute faux bag bartering in Chinatown for Carrie, and meeting up with Adina for dinner at a sensual yet quaint Spanish restaurant in East Village called La Palapa. That girl is a true New Yorker, let me tell you! Here we are at dinner...que buena!

We headed back to Brooklyn for an early night since teaching and 7am flights loomed upon us for the next day. We chatted, watched TV, gave each other shoulder rubs, and enjoyed each others' company. That last night, we all tried to cram into Shadi's bed and even though Carrie's nose was crammed against the wall and I didn't have any blanket, I wouldn't have had it any other way. I loved my trip to NY and love my friends. I'm so happy to have made such wonderful friends in college and I know Shadi and Carrie will be in my life forever...yes, forEVER, ladies...you ain't gettin' out now! Hehe :) I have a few more pics and I'll probably try to post them later once my computer is all set up. But for now, be satisfied with this last one - no Sonya-n'-Carrie trip would be complete without an obnoxious close up of ourselves. This one was taken on our flight back to A-squared at 7 am...we're awfully bright-eyed and bushy tailed for such an early morning and believe me, the business executives on that flight probably felt the same way. We chatted and giggled the whole way home.

Three cheers for New York City: the Big Apple, the City That Never Sleeps, and new home to my hottie Shadi. May my visits there never be few and far between :)

Start spreading the news....

Well folks, here's a quick update. I moved into my new apartment on Fuller Street last night after work and even though the majority of my belongings are still boxed and bagged, I love it. We have a brand new fridge and oven/range, fun hardwood floors, and an *enormous* living room. I've already begun cooking up ideas for a Halloween costume party :)

Although moving all of my stuff for the third time in 10 days wasn't a picnic, Carrie and Stephanie stopped by to say hi and help me out - I haven't seen Steph since May and Carrie since February so it was a blast to have them come over.

And the fun continues...Carrie and I have a 6:00 am flight (ouch) to NYC tomorrow morning to spend Labor Day weekend with the Shadster. I'm looking forward to our adventures in the city and to having a little break from work.

That's about it. I hope you have a wonderful long weekend and get to enjoy these last few fleeting summer days. *sigh*
