It's really late and I should go to bed considering I have a test at 8 am tomorrow morning. I just couldn't resist posting my Halloweekend pictures, however, and after some gentle prodding on the part of my family, here they are. Have a super spooky and safe Halloween. Boo!

The term "carious lesions" refers to areas of severe oral decay caused by dental caries. It also refers to our game-winning flag football team. Hooray! It's kind of gross shouting out "Go Lesions!" but you gotta do what you gotta do. QB Grant (orange hat) let me hold the game ball because I had an awesome touchdown and even awesomer warning from the ref. Oops!

Joan, Shveta, Katrina and I represented the women of co-ed flag football Friday night

Hyden and Scott warming up

It's revolution, baby! My Boston Tea Party was a hit...well, except with the guy at the front door who thought he was educating me by saying "you know they just threw tea in the harbor, right?" Ah-hem...it's called a pun, jackass!

Josh, Rick, Grant, Trev, and Marty are hangin' tough as the New Kids on the Block.

Please...don't go girl!

Jess set her beer on my "table" right before this picture was taken. Needless to say it was all over her cape 2 seconds later. Hey, it's only cardboard you crazy people!

Brett, Me, and Jamie as an awful Dr. Lantz

Ben (that crazy "free money" infomercial guy) and Kris. Kris kept having to do "physical challenges" set up by Scott on the blue team all night long which entailed running through the party and taking a shot.

Laura, Courtney, and Sara were ready to hoop it up.

The fabulous Shelby as a peacock

Axl Rose and Donny of NKOTB fame: an unlikely pair

Trevor as the Tooth Fairy on Saturday night. Seriously, Trevor was so pretty in makeup that I couldn't concentrate when he was talking to me.

Sara and "Hurricane" Katrina

My bedroom after Halloweekend. Hey, one has to have priorities!

My sister snail mailed me this great lobster-in-a-t-shirt magnet and told me to put it on my fridge. Does anyone else think that's hilarious?

Boo!

Here's just a quick post to give you a scare on ol' Hallow's Eve. Okay, maybe not but I just wanted to say a few things:

1.) I was just about to write in my blog with the title "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year," obviously referring to Halloween. I quickly opened up my sister's blog for a peek and guess what she'd beaten me to doing? I love that my family loves Halloween.

2.) Don't forget to "fall back" one hour today!

3.) It's been a fun weekend with a few really late nights in a row. I just love seeing everyone dressed up in costume and pics from the big Delta Sig Halloween party will be up soon. A few of my favorite costumes were my friend Holly and her boyfriend as Nancy and Sid Vicious, the New Kids on the Block, the best Guns n' Roses I've ever seen, Chris and Christina as Zoro and a flamenco dancer, Trevor as the Tooth Fairy, and a few sexy Rainbow Brites. Watch for those pics soon.

4.) Josh and I are excited for our third annual School of Music Halloween concert this evening. It's become a little tradition for us to do together on Halloween. The concert is not only fun to listen to but every instrumental section dresses up in costume and participates in hilarious antics throughout the show. I can't wait until 8 pm tonight!

5.) I signed up to play on our class's co-ed flag football team. I love football and even though I'm more experienced playing in the back yard with a nerf ball and my cousins, I thought everyone would be just as casual and non-competitive as me. Much to my own surprise (and that of my teammates), I actually scored one of the three touchdowns of the night on Friday. I was so excited that I spiked the ball in the end zone and did the Dirty Bird in celebratory glee. I got a warning from the ref for unsportsmanlike conduct and felt really, really bad. I didn't know! Maybe next week I'll keep a pen in my sock to sign autographs after I score ;)

No time for a post but I would like to note that my fabulous friend Carrie turned 23 today. Hooray! On the phone today she mentioned that she would have been mad if I had remembered to wish my weblog a happy birthday yesterday and had forgotten hers. Hehe. At any rate, three cheers to Carrie/Harrie/Harolyn today on her big day!

Happy Birthday, Carrie!

Happy Birthday, Blog!

Just a quick note to celebrate the birthday of my blog today! That's right, two years ago today this well-adjusted blog you're reading now was just a little bloggling. Thanks to my friend Emily for the inspiration to start a weblog and some technical support along the way :)

Feel free to browse through my archives on the left in celebration of my blog's birthday. *tear...they grow up so fast!

p.s.~ it is super weird to refer to my own weblog in the third person?

Today has been quite a crummy day. I couldn't find anything I need for my Halloween costume on my shopping-study break, I had to study fatty acid metabolism for hours, my neighbors are idiots, my pumpkin spice latte spilled all over my lecture notes, and even my fortune cookie after dinner reprimanded me harshly saying that only I could change my own life and that no one else could do it for me. Waaaaaaah! I hope tomorrow is a little better.

The good news is that this week isn't looking too bad (only 3 tests and 1 practical!). My, how relative school has become. Josh overheard some undergrads yesterday complaining in disbelief about having "2 exams every week for the rest of the semester." I definitely would have complained about that 2 years ago too but now 2 exams a week seems like a flippin' vacation. *sigh*

At any rate, here's a conundrum with which I'll leave you. In the parking lot of one of the public pools here is an enormous pile of...SNOW! I actually saw it in that same parking lot 3-4 weeks ago as I was driving past and thought it must be salt or something but today I actually got out of the car and stuck my foot in it. All my 23 years of Michigan experience told me that it is indeed an enormous pile of snow sitting in some rando parking lot in the middle of Ann Arbor. How did it get there? Why? And why in tarnations hasn't it melted? It's been above 50 every day and hasn't snowed for the last 6 months! If you have the answer, please please email me. Josh and I are feeling extremely disconcerted and uncomfortable by not being able to figure it out. Frankly, it's driving us mad.

After laser tag on Friday night most of the D1 class headed out to the bar to forget about our 4 exams and practical last week. We closed down the The Jug that night and had a great time. What's that they say about working hard but playing harder?

Me and Katrina letting loose at The Jug

My Dad noted this weekend that Josh is always holding a beer in my pictures. Hmmm...maybe he's not the type of guy I should bring home to my parents after all...

Ewww, why does my head look so tiny?

Slump Day

1.) Fall break was a tease. In retrospect I'd almost rather not have had it because I think it'll take me a while to get the gears turning agin. During those 4 days, I was reminded of what it feels like to be well-rested and adequately nourished. Now I'm back to reality which basically means that a.) I'm stressed for our big practical tomorrow and 4 tests next week and b.) I just ate a Frosty with mix-in M&M's.

2.) I've decided that I just can't take living in this apartment building anymore. It's a shame because I love the apartment, the location is perfect, I really don't want to move again, and I was actually planning on staying here all 4 years of school. Unfortunately, a rent special for this fall drove all of the undergrad riff-raff my way and I've had to endure countless hours of headache-inducing bass, idiots racing up and down the stairs at all hours, and even some drunk party-goers tearing a phone book to shreds and scattering the pieces ALL over the building. I'm simply too old for this now. See why I'm openly ageist?

3.) I was definitely on a roll tonight thinking up Halloween costumes during dinner. I've been feeling pretty down about my lack of festiveness for my fave holiday so far this year (all of my decorations accidentally ended up in GR) but rest assured that I'll try to play a little catch-up this weekend. At the very least I'll get a pumpkin for the apartment and get my costume together. And some goodie bags maybe. And some apple cider and pumpkin donuts. A new pair of Halloween socks couldn't hurt either...

4.) I got two new pairs of glasses. One pair is simple and professional and I'll probably wear them when I see patients. The other pair is red and retro and my Mom picked them out. The lady is hip, what can I say?

My brain just suddenly snapped off and I think it's time to hit the hay. I'll leave with a quotation from Halloween's two biggest fans:

Tanya: Okay, I know it's been done before but why don't you just be a bunch of grapes?
Me: Tanya! God! That is so unoriginal. I might as well just be a witch then.
Tanya: Only in our sick, sad world is being a bunch of grapes for Halloween considered unimaginative.

Thoughts for the Week

1.) My Mom's cooking is the bomb (for lack of a better term). I literally walked in the door Saturday evening to piping-hot bowl of homemade vegetarian swedish meatballs and was treated to an Indian feast last night. Who does that? Fortunately, my mom. Neener neener neener. (sorry Tanya!)

2.) Of all the Michigan football games to miss, why oh why did it have to be a buzzer beater? I sold my ticket at face value a mere hour before the Penn State game to some rando guy because I knew I'd be on the road headed for GR. Josh and I actually pulled off the highway in Okemos just to listen to the last few seconds on the radio. What a game! Henne, all is forgiven. Go Blue!

3.) I simply cannot express my fury at the way women in this country are shoved into an unrealistic, cookie-cutter body type expectation. If a woman, God forbid, desires fashionable and well-cut pants from stores of the likes of Express, The Limited, or The Gap, she must be of Barbie proportions. I apologize for having a size 4 waist and being...gasp!...5'3'' but not all of us are supermodels. Josh always expresses his amazement at the women's clothing industry that has arbitrary, single-digit, one-size-should-fit-all-so-you'd-better-lose-some-weight-fatso sizes instead of the obvious and realistic waist and inseam measurements that men's pants have. I was informed yesterday that The Limited doesn't even MAKE short or long pant lengths and they have the nerve to call their pant sizes 4 regular. Hmph!

4.) As one of the Social Chairs for my class, I organized a laser tag outing last Friday as a post midterm week celebration. I was thrilled that there was a sizeable turnout and everyone had a blast (lame pun most certainly intended). To my surprise, I got the highest score in the first game out of all 21 of us beating second place by over 5,000 points! I still can't figure out how that happened but for a proponent of anti-gun initiatives, I sure am a sharp shooter!

5.) My college friends Shadi and Carrie made me feel so special last week. They both went through a lot of trouble to celebrate my birthday which meant a lot to me. I heart my Friend Marathon amigas :)

I believe that this post could go on and on but I'll end it here for now. I'll post again once I get back to Ann Arbor tomorrow about my scary practical coming up this Thursday and my Halloweeny slackerness. Only 13 more days!

I should add an amendment to my last post that says "you know you're a D1 when you feel like crying because of the amount of work you have to do but can't because it would waste too much time." Yowza, it's been a tough week! I've had 4 exams so far (1 every day...hooray!) and I have my first waxing practical tomorrow afternoon. I'm shaking pretty heavily in my boots for it and will be thrilled once it's over. I can't believe I'm going to be timed tomorrow to see how fast (1.5 hours or less) I can sculpt a painstakingly accurate #8 out of hot wax. Dental school is too weird.

At any rate, just thought I'd pop in and say hi. Fortunately, a last-minute cancellation in our lecture schedule allows us to start at 10 instead of the usual 8 am so I can't wait to go to bed tonight and wake up feeling...gasp!...rested. I'll be spending time this weekend 1.) RELAXING, 2.) drilling in the lab in preparation for another practical next Thursday, and 3.) back in GR playing the overworked-and-sleep-deprived-student pity card on my parents. Did I mention that I have next Monday and Tuesday off as a fall break from school? I guess I just couldn't let myself think more than one day ahead at a time. Let me tell you, this break couldn't have come soon enough.

Happy fall Friday! :)

You Know You're a D1 When...

You Know You're a D1 When...

1.)...a latte, a Diet Coke, and a cup of joe all before noon aren't cutting it for the four hours of IMS lecture you have from 8am - noon.

2.)...you find crafting a maxillary central incisor out of colored wax to be enjoyable, if not cathartic.

3.)...you patronizingly "awwww" to yourself when you see undergrads carrying around Biochemistry, Physiology, or Organic Chemistry text books.

4.)...you find yourself comparing your teeth with those of your colleagues in public...say, checking for the third cusp on Josh's premolars in Starbucks?

5.)...you and some classmates organize a "phone tree" on Friday night to make sure that everyone is awake by 8:30 Saturday morning to study. No, really.

6.)...Friday night charades is the wildest thing you've done all weekend.

7.)...your team correctly guesses septic tank, weinerschnitzel, and onomatopoeia at Friday night charades.

8.)...you convice yourself that you have every new dental disease or malformation you learn about from gingivitis to amelogenesis imperfecta II.

9.)...you find ways to procrastinate (i.e. write in your weblog) to put off studying for the 4 exams and practical you have this week!

Whoa! I just watched the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire trailer online (I mean...I'm doing homework) and I seriously got the chills! Goblet of Fire is my absolute favorite book out of all 6 thus far and the movie looks amazing. Quidditch World Cup, Mad Eye Moody, Triwizard Tournament? Awwwwweeeeesome! I can barely contain myself!

November 18th. Who's with me?

Okay, I know I've been camera crazy these past few weeks but I haven't heard any complaints about the onslaught of pictures. Come to think of it, I haven't heard too many compliments about my blog lately either. Hmmm....

At any rate, here are a few pics from this past weekend. I spent Saturday morning at the Farmer's Market with my Mom and we went out to lunch. It was a gorgeous day spent with great company. I also attended my first ever party at "The Tank," Solomon, Damon, and James' abode affectionately nicknamed for its abundance of interesting and rare fish. They're hardcore fish nerds and I realize only now what I've been missing by not making the first two parties at The Tank. I took a few photos of the ever-popular flip-cup action...too bad I didn't grab a few snaps of the Jell-O shots with Swedish fish in them :)

Enjoy!

My Mom took me to the Farmer's Market Saturday morning. She bought me fresh raspberries and apple cider. Hooray!

Anchor Josh vs. Anchor Hal. I thought Hal might be at a disadvantage because of his jumbo thumb but I guess I thought wrong.

I've never seen a more serious look on AJ's face than in this picture. Flip it like it ain't no thang!

Come on, Julia! Didn't they teach you anything at Wisconsin?

Here are a few pics from my White Coat Ceremony yesterday. It was exciting and fun to finally get my white coat and my parents were tickled pink when I showed them all of my projects in the lab. What a fun milestone in my professional career!
